Check out Steve Burchell's report on East Pond
Date:11/07/2024
Peg number: 2
Weather: Bright and Sunny, water temp = 17.3°C. air temp = 16.6°C at 05.15am
Bait: sweetcorn, Maggots/ red and white, small red worms & Lob worms.
Set Up:
Rod 1: slider float, size 16 hook
Rod 2: maggot feeder size 12 hook
Time: 05.30 am
rod 1 sweet corn , one grain , 6oz Rudd one per cast
rod 2, maggot and red worm, small perch up against the lily pads fishing the drop off from 4ft to deeper water.
Time: 07.00am
Replaced slider float with a Polaris and one oz ledger. Up the hook size to a 12.
swapped over to two grains of corn and a couple of freebies every cast, Rudd now getting bigger, largest to date 1lb.
Sun now getting warmer and you can see a shoal of small Rudd (3 to 4 inches) swimming across the surface. They scatter every couple of minutes, it looks like several big perch are hunting them.
Air temp now up to 22.3°C. every thing has dropped off apart from the Rudd.
Time: 07.15am.
Rod 2 replaced bite with small red worm, fed over dead maggots, instant take of a 1 1/2lb eel. Pointed nose/mouth. Close to the pads
Re-baited another eel about the same size. Pointed nose/mouth.
Ten minutes later another eel about the same size all coming from the drop off from 4ft to deeper water fishing over dead maggots.
Still taking the Rudd , one a chuck. Two grains of corn produce the better fish. All taken on the drop.
Time: 07.45am
Massive take on the lob worm, 2lb eel rounded nose/mouth.
15 minutes later another eel with the same type of head. About the same size. Didn't weigh them as my wife mourns about the smelly nets.
There appears to be a mixture of eels with the pointed nose/mouth preferring worms and the rounded nose/mouth from past experience preferring fish.
Next time I will bring some frozen sprats and mount a small section on a size 10 hair rig.(should be interesting) may even tempt the large perch
Time: 08.30am. Changes if any: None
Took three more eels ranging from 1lb to 3lb in weight all appear to be the rounded nose/mouth on large lob worms fed over dead maggots.
Rudd not getting any larger still mostly 6oz. all taken on the drop, even the small perch are taking corn on the drop.
Sun really bright now. Air temp from lake 25°C water temp also gone up.
all taken on the drop . Even the small perch are taking corn on the drop.
Time:12.15pm
packed up, back to work. Interesting day for a first visit. Walked around the lake and pegs 1 -5 get the first sun in the morning with pegs 6 - 9 in shadow. Peg 7 does have some interesting areas, and looks inviting
if you are new to the lake look for the layby with the telephone box.
travelling light is a real recommendation although you can use a folding sack barrow (I will be looking into this) for the Rudd and small perch. Lightly shot float one grain of corn on a size 14. and a couple of freebies and its one a chuck. For the larger Rudd same set up use two grains, they will still grab the bait if you use three grains
Conclusions, well worth the visit, next visit will try further around the lake. (peg 7 ) has taken my fancy.
