Remembering John

John Clarke
John Clarke

Harting Combe hosted the John Clarke Memorial match on Saturday, August 23rd. Members and friends gathered to celebrate the life of our dear friend and fellow angler, John Clarke, who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

John was a dedicated member of our club for many years, during which he formed numerous friendships through his love of fishing. Those who knew him can vouch for his exceptional skill as an innovator in fishing gadgets.

John was a loyal supporter of the club, frequently attending matches, events, and work parties. His presence will be greatly missed, but this match was a fitting tribute to his memory.

Harting Combe was one of the club's waters that John enjoyed fishing, particularly for its beautiful setting. Alongside the memorial match, John's family unveiled a memorial bench in his honour. Members and friends from both the PDAC and Oakhanger AC attended the unveiling and fished the match.

Before the unveiling, PDAC representative and former match secretary, Andy Reed, remarked, "John was in a class of his own, Clever, Funny, and Unique." He added, "John was a great innovator of fishing gadgets, generally something that would give him an edge to win a fishing match. He has left a lasting impression on the club and will never be forgotten."

John's family also donated a memorial trophy, which was presented by John's son, Simon, to the match winner Barry Payne.

Thirteen anglers participated in the match, with some finding it challenging, although Barry had no trouble with a good catch of Bream. PDAC club President, Mike Parr, had work hard with some Bream to secure the runner-up position, and PDAC Chairman Steve Chapman finished third.

In honour of John's memory, his wife Viv Clarke graciously asked that the proceeds from this event be given to the Rowens Hospice. With additional donations made, a total of £240.00 had been raised.

Viv expressed gratitude to the Committee for organising the event and facilitating the placement of John's memorial bench, appreciating the opportunity to visit the pond, reflect on John, and enjoy the same attractions he cherished at the venue.
